# Sign In to ChimeEdu with Google

> Use Continue with Google to sign in to an existing ChimeEdu account with your school Google Workspace or Gmail address — no password, two-factor still applies.

If the email on your ChimeEdu account is a Google account — a school Google Workspace address or a Gmail address — you can sign in with **Continue with Google** instead of typing a password. It works for teachers, students, and institution staff, and it's the fastest way in on a school Chromebook where you're already signed in to Google.

<Note>
  Google sign-in is for **existing** ChimeEdu accounts. It never creates one. If you don't have an account yet, [create it first](/teachers/create-account) with the same email as your Google account, then use Continue with Google from the next sign-in on.
</Note>

## How to sign in with Google

<Steps>
  <Step title="Go to the sign-in page">
    Visit [app.chimeedu.com/login](https://app.chimeedu.com/login).
  </Step>

  <Step title="Choose Continue with Google">
    Click **Continue with Google** under the Sign In button. A small Google window opens. Leave the Email and Password fields empty.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Pick the right Google account">
    Choose the Google account whose email is the one on your ChimeEdu account. If you're signed in to several Google accounts, Google lists them all — pick carefully, because a different address won't match.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Enter your two-factor code, if you use one">
    If your account has two-factor authentication turned on, ChimeEdu asks for the code from your authenticator app next, exactly as it does after a password.
  </Step>

  <Step title="You're in">
    You land on your dashboard, signed in.
  </Step>
</Steps>

## The first time: linking

The first time you use Continue with Google, ChimeEdu checks that Google has verified your email address, matches it to your account, and **links** that Google account to it. From then on, Google sign-in recognises you by the Google account itself, not just the address. You'll get an in-app security notification, **Google Sign-In Linked**, so you know it happened, and a **New Device Sign-In** notice the first time a device signs in this way.

You can see, add, or remove the link at any time in **Account Settings → Security → Google sign-in**:

* **Linked** shows a green badge with the date. Click **Unlink**, then **Confirm**, to remove it. Nothing else about your account changes, and you can link again later.
* **Not linked** shows a **Continue with Google** button. Only a Google account with the **same email as your ChimeEdu account** can be linked here; a different Google email is refused.

## Good to know

* **Two-factor authentication still applies.** Google sign-in replaces your password, not your second factor.
* **Your password doesn't change.** You can keep using your password, a passkey, or an [emailed sign-in link](/help/sign-in-with-a-link) whenever you like.
* **It confirms your email.** If you never clicked the confirmation link from your welcome email, signing in with Google takes care of that too, because Google has already verified the address.
* **What ChimeEdu receives and keeps.** Google sends your email, name and profile picture with the sign-in. ChimeEdu keeps only your Google account identifier and the time it was linked, so later sign-ins recognise you. It asks for no access to Gmail, Drive, Calendar or any other Google data, and never sees your Google password.
* **One Google account per ChimeEdu account, and the other way round.** A Google account can't be linked to two ChimeEdu accounts, and a ChimeEdu account holds one Google link at a time.

## Google sign-in in the classroom

<Tip>
  On school devices, students are usually already signed in to their school Google account. Continue with Google skips the password entirely, so a whole class can get in without anyone typing anything.
</Tip>

* Students need a ChimeEdu account first, created with their class code and the **same** school email. Google sign-in then works from the next sign-in on.
* Student accounts that are waiting for a parent or guardian's permission can't sign in yet, with Google, a link, or a password. Ask your teacher if you're not sure.
* Google sign-in doesn't turn Google Classroom on. Rosters and assignments still live in ChimeEdu.

## Troubleshooting

* **"No ChimeEdu account uses that Google email yet."** You picked a Google account whose address isn't on your ChimeEdu account. Click Continue with Google again and choose the right one, or sign in with your password. This message never means your account is gone.
* **The Google window closed or never opened.** Allow popups for app.chimeedu.com, or use your password or an [emailed link](/help/sign-in-with-a-link) instead.
* **"That Google account uses a different email than your ChimeEdu account."** This appears when linking from Account Settings. Sign in to Google with the address on your ChimeEdu account and try again.
* **You changed the email on your ChimeEdu account.** The link follows the Google account, not the address. Sign in with your password, **Unlink** in Account Settings → Security, then link the new Google account.
* **No Continue with Google button at all.** Your browser or network is blocking Google's sign-in script. The other sign-in options still work, and [Account & Login](/help/account-and-login) covers them.
