# Campuses

> Add the school buildings that make up your institution, from the national registry or by hand, and remove ones you no longer need.

A **campus** is a physical school within your institution. A single school has one campus; a district or a school with several sites has several. Teachers belong to a campus; staff oversee all of them.

Campuses matter because they're how teachers join your institution (see [Introduction](/staff/introduction)), and because [Performance](/staff/performance-and-adoption) can break results down by campus.

## Adding a campus

Institution Admins choose **Add campus** and pick one of two paths:

    Type the school's name (and optionally a state) to search the same US school database teachers use at sign-up, then **Attach**. Registry campuses carry their official address and grade span, and a teacher who picks that school during account setup lands in your institution automatically.

    A school can belong to only one institution, so schools already attached elsewhere don't appear in results.

  <Tab title="Create a custom campus">
    For a site that isn't in the registry — a new building, an annex, a program — enter a name plus optional city, state, ZIP, and lowest and highest grade. Custom campuses show a **Custom** badge and can be edited later.

## Editing a campus

Only **custom** campuses can be edited. Registry campuses take their details from the national database, so their name and address can't be changed here; if the registry is wrong, [contact us](https://app.chimeedu.com/contact).

## Removing a campus

**Remove** detaches the campus from your institution. It's refused while any teacher is still linked to that campus — move them to another campus first (from their account page) or [unbind](/staff/teachers-and-students) them. A removed custom campus is deleted; a removed registry campus simply stops being yours.

Leaders can see the Campuses page but not change it.
