# The Institution Staff Dashboard

> What staff.chimeedu.com is, who can sign in, what each staff role can see and do, and how it relates to the teacher app.

**staff.chimeedu.com** is the dashboard for the people who run a school or district on ChimeEdu — principals, instructional leaders, and IT — as opposed to the teachers who create classrooms and activities in the main app.

It sits above the teacher app. Teachers keep working at **app.chimeedu.com** exactly as before; the staff dashboard gives your institution's leadership a view across all of them: who teaches here, which students are enrolled, how activities are being used, anonymized performance, and the tools to keep things running when staff change.

## Who can sign in

You sign in with your **normal ChimeEdu account** — the same email and password (or passkey) you use anywhere else. Two-factor authentication applies if you have it enabled.

What gates access is **membership**: ChimeEdu links your account to your institution as a staff member with one of three roles. An account that isn't a staff member of any institution is refused with "This account is not a staff member of any institution," even if the password is correct.

<Note>
  Institutions are set up by the ChimeEdu team. If your school isn't on ChimeEdu yet, or you should have staff access and don't, [contact us](https://app.chimeedu.com/contact).
</Note>

## The three staff roles

| Role                  | Intended for                                                  | Can                                                                                                                                                        |
| --------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------- | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Institution Admin** | Principal, head of school, district admin | Everything below: invite and remove staff and teachers, manage campuses, reassign content, curate the library, change settings |
| **Leader** | Assistant principals, department heads, instructional coaches | See everything — rosters, performance, the activity log, library, settings — but change nothing |
| **IT / Network** | Technical staff | The **IT & Network** page, the teacher roster (with the ability to fix a teacher's email or campus and send a password reset), and SSO draft configuration |

Roles are about the institution, not about ChimeEdu as a whole. An Institution Admin has no special powers anywhere else on the platform, and a teacher's own plan and content are never affected by their institution's staff roles.

## What's on the dashboard

* **Dashboard** — headline counts (campuses, teachers, students, members), quick actions, a 30-day performance snapshot, and the most recent changes made by staff.
* **Institution** — [Performance](/staff/performance-and-adoption), [Campuses](/staff/campuses), [Library](/staff/resource-library), [Activity log](/staff/activity-log), [Settings](/staff/settings-and-branding).
* **People** — [Members](/staff/members-and-invitations), [Teachers and Students](/staff/teachers-and-students), [Reassign](/staff/reassign-content).
* **IT** — [IT & Network](/staff/it-and-network).

Each role sees only the pages it can use. IT members land on **IT & Network** when they sign in.

## How teachers and students end up in your institution

Your institution is made of one or more **campuses** — real school buildings, each matched to the national school registry or entered by hand. A **teacher** belongs to your institution when their ChimeEdu account is linked to one of those campuses, which happens when they accept a staff invitation or pick that school during account setup. **Students** belong through their teachers: any student enrolled in a classroom owned by one of your teachers appears on your Students roster. Students are never linked to a campus directly.

<Tip>
  Because the link is by campus, a teacher who chose your school during sign-up appears on your roster automatically — marked **Self-claimed** until they accept an invitation from you. For self-claimed teachers, staff can't change the sign-in email or send a password reset; everything else works. If you see someone who shouldn't be there, **Unbind** them from the Teachers page — that only removes the link, never their account or their work.
</Tip>

## If the dashboard says your institution is suspended

ChimeEdu can pause an institution's staff dashboard. When that happens every staff member sees a single notice explaining that nothing can be viewed or changed until it's reinstated. Teacher and student accounts keep working normally. If you believe it's a mistake, contact ChimeEdu support.
