# Secure Your ChimeEdu Account with 2FA and Passkeys

> Learn how to set up two-factor authentication or a passkey to keep your ChimeEdu teacher account, classrooms, and student data secure.

Your ChimeEdu account holds your classrooms, student data, and everything you've built as an educator — so protecting it is important. ChimeEdu offers two layers of enhanced security beyond a standard password: **Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)** using an authenticator app, and **Passkeys** using your device's built-in biometric authentication. You can enable one or both, and ChimeEdu will notify you by email whenever your security settings change.

## Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)

Two-factor authentication adds a second verification step to your sign-in. Even if someone obtains your password, they cannot access your account without also having the one-time code generated by your authenticator app.

### What you'll need

A free authenticator app installed on your smartphone, such as:

* **Google Authenticator** (iOS / Android)
* **Authy** (iOS / Android)
* **Microsoft Authenticator** (iOS / Android)

### How to enable 2FA

    Sign in to ChimeEdu and navigate to your **Account Settings**, then select the **Security** section.

  <Step title="Select Two-Factor Authentication">
    Click **Enable Two-Factor Authentication**. ChimeEdu will display a QR code and a backup setup key.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Scan the QR code">
    Open your authenticator app and scan the QR code shown on screen. The app will add a new ChimeEdu entry and begin generating 6-digit codes that refresh every 30 seconds.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Enter the verification code">
    Type the current 6-digit code from your authenticator app into the confirmation field on the ChimeEdu setup screen, then click **Verify and Enable**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Save your backup codes">
    ChimeEdu will display a set of one-time backup codes. Store these somewhere safe — they let you recover access to your account if you ever lose your phone or authenticator app.

### Signing in with 2FA

Once 2FA is enabled, the sign-in process has two steps:

1. Enter your **email and password** as normal.
2. When prompted, open your authenticator app and enter the current **6-digit code**.

  Each code is valid for 30 seconds. If it expires before you enter it, simply wait for the next code to appear in your app.

### Disabling 2FA

To turn off 2FA, return to **Account Settings → Security** and select **Disable Two-Factor Authentication**. You'll be asked to confirm with your current password. ChimeEdu will send an email notification confirming the change.

## Passkeys

A passkey replaces your password with your device's built-in biometric authentication — Face ID, Touch ID, Windows Hello, or a device PIN. Passkeys are phishing-resistant and faster to use than a password, and they work in all modern browsers on both desktop and mobile.

### How to set up a passkey

    Sign in to ChimeEdu and go to **Account Settings → Security**.

  <Step title="Register a new passkey">
    Click **Add Passkey**. Your browser will prompt you to authenticate using your device's biometric method (Face ID, Touch ID, Windows Hello, or device PIN).
  </Step>

  <Step title="Name your passkey">
    Give the passkey a recognisable name — for example, "MacBook Pro" or "iPhone 15" — so you can identify it later if you manage multiple devices.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Confirm and save">
    Approve the biometric prompt. ChimeEdu will register the passkey and list it in your security settings. The setup is complete.
  </Step>

### Signing in with a passkey

1. Go to [app.chimeedu.com/login](https://app.chimeedu.com/login).
2. Click **Sign in with Passkey**.
3. Your browser will prompt you to authenticate using the biometric method linked to your passkey (e.g. Face ID or Windows Hello).
4. Approve the prompt — you're signed in immediately. No password required.

<Tip>
  You can register passkeys on multiple devices — for example, your school laptop and your personal phone — so you always have a convenient sign-in method available.

### Managing and removing passkeys

Your registered passkeys are listed in **Account Settings → Security**. To remove a passkey, click the delete icon next to it and confirm with your password. Removing a passkey does not affect other sign-in methods.

## Password requirements

If you're using password-based sign-in, your ChimeEdu password must meet all of the following requirements:

* At least **10 characters** long
* At least one **uppercase letter** (A–Z)
* At least one **lowercase letter** (a–z)
* At least one **number** (0–9)
* At least one **symbol** (e.g. `!`, `@`, `#`, `$`)

  Never share your ChimeEdu password with students or colleagues. If you believe your password has been compromised, reset it immediately at [app.chimeedu.com/forgot-password](https://app.chimeedu.com/forgot-password).

## Security email notifications

ChimeEdu automatically sends a notification to your registered email address whenever any of the following security events occur:

* Your password is changed
* Two-Factor Authentication is enabled or disabled
* A new passkey is registered or removed
* A sign-in is detected from an unrecognised device or location

If you receive a security notification for an action you didn't take, reset your password immediately and contact ChimeEdu support.
