# Archive Activities and Reuse Them Next Term

> Archive a ChimeEdu activity when a unit wraps up — it leaves the classroom and stops counting toward your plan — then restore it fresh for a new class.

When a unit has run its course, you no longer have to choose between deleting an activity and letting it clutter your dashboard. **Archive** puts it away — out of the classroom, out of your students' view, and out of your plan limit — and keeps everything you built so you can **restore** it for a different class next term.

Archiving works for all seven activity types: Maps, Quizzes, Flash Cards, Timelines, Fill-in-the-Blank, Graphs & Charts, and Diagrams. It's available on every plan.

## Archiving an activity

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open the activity">
    From your Dashboard, open the activity you want to put away.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Click Archive">
    The **Archive** button sits next to **Delete**. A confirmation explains what will happen before anything does.
  </Step>
</Steps>

Archiving does four things at once:

* **Removes it from its classroom** — students no longer see it in their classroom or dashboard.
* **Locks the links.** Anyone opening a saved link — the play link, a shared URL, even a Study Guide embed — sees a *"This activity has been archived — please contact your teacher"* notice instead of the activity. That includes you: while archived, you work with it from your dashboard, not the play link.
* **Frees up your plan.** Archived activities don't count toward your activity limit, so archiving makes room to create something new.
* **Keeps everything.** Nothing is deleted — your content and your students' work are all still there.

<Note>
  Archived activities are kept for **365 days**. If you haven't restored one within a year of archiving it, it's permanently deleted.
</Note>

## Finding your archived activities

On the Dashboard's Activities panel (and the All Activities page), toggle the **Archived** filter to switch the list between your active and archived activities. Open any archived activity to view it, check student work, or restore it.

## While it's archived, you can still see everything

Archiving hides the activity from students — not from you. From the archived activity's page you can still:

* Review **student submissions and results** — fill-in-the-blank attempts, chart submissions, flash-card progress, and the work on issued copies.
* See the **Students panel** for issued activities, showing who owns which copy. It's read-only while archived — assignments resume when you restore.
* **Export PDFs** of timelines and diagrams, including your students' issued copies.

## Restoring an activity

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open the archived activity">
    Use the **Archived** filter to find it, then open it and click **Restore**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Choose a classroom">
    The picker pre-selects the classroom it came from, but you can send it anywhere — that's the point of archiving a unit for next semester. If the original classroom no longer exists, just pick its new home.
  </Step>
</Steps>

<Warning>
  **Restoring clears student work.** Submissions, student-added pins and entries, work on issued copies, and flash-card study progress from the previous run are removed, so the activity comes back fresh for its new class. Everything **you** created — questions, passages, cards, example pins, reference material, and settings — is kept. The confirmation reminds you of this before anything happens; if you still need last term's work, review or export it *before* restoring.
</Warning>

<Tip>
  If restoring would put you over your plan's activity limit, ChimeEdu asks you to archive or delete something else first — or upgrade — rather than restoring silently over the cap.

## Common questions

<AccordionGroup>
  <Accordion title="How is Archive different from Delete?">
    **Delete is permanent and immediate** — the activity and everything in it is gone. **Archive is reversible for 365 days** and keeps everything. If there's any chance you'll teach the unit again, archive it.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="What do students see if they open an old link?">
    A notice that the activity has been archived and to contact their teacher — never an error page, and never the activity's content.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Can I archive a Quick Activity?">
    No — Quick Activities are temporary by design and expire on their own after 8 hours. Archiving is for permanent activities.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Does archiving work for Assessments, Experiences, or Study Guides?">
    Not yet — archiving currently covers the seven activity types. A Study Guide that *embeds* an archived activity keeps working; the embedded piece shows the archived notice.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Can I restore to a different classroom than the original?">
    Yes — the picker defaults to the original classroom, but you can choose any classroom you own. That's the intended workflow for reusing a unit with a new class.
