# Run Live Class Quizzes with Join Codes and Leaderboards

> Create and launch real-time multiplayer quizzes on ChimeEdu. Students join with a 6-character code — no account needed. Guest play supported.

Quizzes on ChimeEdu are real-time and competitive. Every student in the room answers the same question at the same moment, a live leaderboard updates after each round, and you see class-wide response data instantly — no manual tallying, no waiting until the weekend. The whole class joins with one 6-character code from any device.

## How Quizzes Work

ChimeEdu quizzes are built for the live classroom. Here is what each session gives you and your students:

## Creating a Quiz

  <Step title="Open New Activity">
    From your teacher dashboard, click **New Activity** and select **Quiz**.

  <Step title="Add questions and set timers">
    Add your questions one by one. For each question, set a per-question timer — use shorter countdowns for straightforward recall and longer ones for reasoning tasks.

  <Step title="Publish or save for Quick Activity use">
    Publish the quiz directly to one of your classrooms, or save it as a Quick Activity so you can launch it on the fly without assigning it to a specific class.

  <Step title="Launch the session">
    When you are ready to go live, open the quiz and click **Launch Session**. ChimeEdu creates a live room and generates your 6-character join code.

  <Step title="Share the join code">
    Share the 6-character join code with your students. They open any browser, enter the code, and they are in the room within seconds.

  <Step title="Start the quiz">
    Once your players are in the lobby, click **Start** to kick off the first question. The timer starts, answers stream in, and the leaderboard begins updating.

  Display the join code on a projector or screen share so every student can see it at once. Students can join from phones, tablets, or laptops — no installation needed.

## Running a Live Session

Once the quiz is underway, the teacher view gives you full control of the room:

* **Pause** at any point to stop the timer and discuss a question with the class before revealing results.
* **Skip** a question if it is no longer relevant or if you are short on time.
* **Advance manually** to move to the next question without waiting for the timer to expire.
* **Display the leaderboard** between questions to build excitement and keep students motivated through to the end.

The leaderboard updates live after every question, so students always know where they stand. Use this to your advantage — the competitive element keeps the whole room focused.

## Reviewing Results

After the session ends, ChimeEdu gives you a results summary broken down question by question:

* **Class-wide response data** — see how many students chose each answer option for every question, so you can spot comprehension gaps at a glance.
* **Individual scores** — for signed-in students, scores are automatically recorded against their classroom profile and available for your records.

  Guest students (those who joined without a ChimeEdu account) can participate fully — their scores simply will not be saved to the classroom record. If attendance and score tracking matter for a particular session, remind students to sign in before joining.

## Best Practices for Live Quizzes

* **Keep sessions focused.** Eight to twelve questions is a natural classroom rhythm — long enough to cover the material, short enough to hold attention.
* **Vary your timer lengths.** Pair short timers (10–15 seconds) with single-recall questions and longer timers (30–45 seconds) with questions that require working through a problem.
* **Pause to teach.** When you see a question that most students got wrong, pause before moving on and use it as a teaching moment. The data is right in front of you.
* **Use Quick Activities for spontaneous sessions.** If you want to run a quiz without assigning it to a classroom first, save it as a Quick Activity — you can launch it instantly, share the code, and still review results afterwards.
* **Repeat high-value quizzes.** You can launch the same quiz multiple times. Re-running a quiz a few lessons later is an easy way to check whether understanding has improved.
