# Use AI to Author Fill-in-the-Blank Activities on ChimeEdu

> Let ChimeEdu's AI suggest which words to blank out in your passage, with a plain-language explanation for why each choice tests a key concept.

The Fill-in-the-Blank AI assistant helps you decide which words in a passage are the best candidates for blanks — based on conceptual importance. Rather than reading through a passage and manually hunting for the right words to remove, you get a set of reasoned suggestions you can evaluate, accept, or dismiss one by one.

## Using AI for Fill-in-the-Blank

<Steps>
  <Step title="Create or open a Fill-in-the-Blank activity">
    From your classroom dashboard, create a new Fill-in-the-Blank activity or open an existing one you want to edit.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Paste in your passage">
    Paste the text you want to turn into a cloze-style activity. This can be your own writing, a textbook excerpt, or any passage from your curriculum materials.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Click AI Suggest Blanks">
    Select the **AI Suggest Blanks** option. The AI will analyse your passage and return a list of suggested words to blank out.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Review suggested blanks with explanations">
    Each suggestion comes with an explanation of why that word was selected — for example, because it's a key vocabulary term or a central fact in the passage. Read the explanations before deciding.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Accept or dismiss each suggestion">
    Accept the suggestions that make sense for your learning objectives and dismiss any that don't fit. You're not committed to the AI's list.

    For each accepted blank, add any acceptable answer variants (synonyms, spelling variants) and optionally attach a hint for students who get stuck.

## How the AI selects blanks

The AI doesn't blank out words at random. It targets:

* **Key concepts** — terms or ideas that are central to understanding the passage.
* **Vocabulary** — subject-specific words that students should be able to recall and spell.
* **Important facts** — specific names, dates, or values that anchor the content.

For every suggestion, the AI provides a plain-language explanation so you can evaluate its reasoning and decide whether the blank fits your assessment goals.

## Staying in control

AI suggestions are exactly that — suggestions. You make every final decision:

* **You decide which blanks go in.** Accept only the suggestions that align with what you're testing.
* **You set answer variants and hint leniency.** The AI does not configure marking rules. You define what counts as a correct answer and whether hints deduct points.
* **AI provides suggestions, not final answers.** The published activity reflects your choices, not the AI's defaults.

  Start with the AI's suggestions and refine from there — it's significantly faster than manually identifying blanks from a long passage, and the explanations help you think through your assessment intent.
