Reassign (Institution Admins only) changes who owns a piece of content. The classic case is a teacher going on leave: their classroom, its activities, and its students move to the colleague covering, and everything keeps working under the new owner.

What you can reassign

Both teachers must belong to your institution. Experiences (field trips) can’t be reassigned yet.

How it works

1

Choose the teacher and the item

Pick the current owner, then the classroom or item from their list.
2

Choose the new owner

Pick the receiving teacher.
3

Preview

Nothing changes yet. The preview lists what moves (including the student count for a classroom), what stays, and any warnings or blockers.
4

Confirm

The move is made in one step. It appears in the Activity log and under Recent reassignments on the page.

What the preview can tell you

Blocked — you must resolve these first:
  • The activity is inside a classroom. Reassign the whole classroom instead; moving a single activity out from under its class would break the class.
  • A quiz in the classroom has a live game running. Wait for it to end.
Heads up — the move goes ahead, but you should know:
  • The receiving teacher’s plan will be over its activity limit afterwards. Nothing is lost, but they can’t create new activities until they’re back under the limit.
  • An activity uses per-student or group assignment that the receiving teacher’s plan can’t create new assignments for. Existing assignments keep working.
  • An activity has Google Drive attachments. Files stay in the original teacher’s Drive and don’t move.
  • Students move with the classroom, so the new teacher gains access to their work.
  • An assessment or study guide is shared with the original teacher’s other classrooms, so it stays with them. The moved classroom keeps access.

What always stays the same

  • Public and student links keep working; only the owner behind them changes.
  • Tag definitions are copied into the new owner’s tags, matched by name.
  • Grading history and records of who did what are kept as they were.
  • The original teacher’s account and everything else they own are untouched.
Reassignment is one-way. There’s no undo button, but the same tool works in reverse — the Recent reassignments list on the page shows exactly what moved, so you can move it back.
