When you click Browse Google Drive to attach a file, a window from Google should appear so you can choose the file you want. If instead the screen just dims and nothing opens — or you see a short message about third-party cookies — this page explains why, and how to fix it in a few clicks.
Nothing is wrong with your ChimeEdu account or your files. This is a browser privacy setting getting in the way of Google’s file picker, and it’s quick to sort out.

What causes this

The Google Drive picker is a small window that comes straight from Google and opens inside ChimeEdu. For Google to show it, your browser has to let Google set a small file called a cookie while you’re on the ChimeEdu website. Two common settings stop that from happening:
  • Third-party cookies are switched off. To protect your privacy, many browsers block “third-party” cookies — cookies from a company other than the site in your address bar. Google’s picker needs one of those cookies to appear, so blocking them blocks the picker too.
  • You aren’t signed in to Google in this browser. The picker needs to know which Google account’s files to show you. If you’re not signed in to Google, it has nothing to display.
Private and Incognito windows turn both of these off by default — so if you’re browsing in one of those, that is almost always the reason.
The fastest fix: open ChimeEdu in a normal window (not a Private or Incognito one), make sure you’re signed in to Google, and try again. If that works, you don’t need to change any settings at all.

Fix it in your browser

If you’d rather keep using the window you’re in, allow cookies for Google using the steps for your browser below. You only need to do this once.

Google Chrome

1

Open Chrome's cookie settings

Click the three-dot menu in the top-right corner, choose Settings, then open Privacy and security → Third-party cookies.
2

Allow cookies for Google

Choose Allow third-party cookies. If you’d prefer to keep them blocked everywhere else, instead find Allowed to use third-party cookies, click Add, and enter [*.]google.com — this permits Google only and leaves the rest of your protection on.
3

Go back to ChimeEdu

Return to your ChimeEdu tab, refresh the page, and click Browse Google Drive again.

Safari

1

Open Safari's privacy settings

On a Mac, open Safari → Settings → Privacy. On an iPad or iPhone, open the Settings app and tap Safari.
2

Turn off cross-site tracking

Switch off Prevent cross-site tracking, and make sure Block all cookies is also turned off.
3

Go back to ChimeEdu

Return to your ChimeEdu tab, refresh the page, and click Browse Google Drive again.

Firefox

1

Open the protection panel

While you’re on ChimeEdu, click the shield icon just to the left of the web address.
2

Turn off Enhanced Tracking Protection for ChimeEdu

Switch Enhanced Tracking Protection to off for this site. This applies only to ChimeEdu and leaves your protection switched on everywhere else.
3

Go back to ChimeEdu

The page reloads on its own. Click Browse Google Drive again to try the picker.

After you change the setting

  1. Refresh your ChimeEdu tab so the new setting takes effect.
  2. Make sure you’re signed in to Google — visit accounts.google.com and sign in with the account whose Drive you connected.
  3. Click Browse Google Drive again. The picker should now open normally.
