By default, an activity is one artifact that the whole class works on together. Issuance lets you change that: give every student their own copy to build, or split the class into groups that each co-edit one copy. It’s the difference between “we’re annotating this map as a class” and “everyone build your own map of the trade routes, and I’ll review all twenty-eight.”

The three modes

Open the activity’s settings and look for the Issuance section:

One shared

Everyone edits the same map, timeline, or chart — the classic flow, and the default for every activity.

Per-Student

Each assigned student builds their own copy. They can’t see each other’s work; you can see all of it.

Group Assignment

Students are placed into groups (A–Z), and each group co-edits one copy together.
Switching an activity to Per-Student or Group Assignment requires a Plus or Premium plan. One shared is available on every plan, including Free — it’s how every activity has always worked.

Which activities support issuance

Compass and Pie charts already collect one submission per student, so issuing them per-student would mean two different things by the same name. Quizzes, flash cards, and fill-in-the-blank activities record per-student results rather than per-student authorship.

Setting it up

Link the activity to a classroom

Issuance works through classroom enrollment, so the activity must belong to a classroom with students in it. If you haven’t enrolled students yet, see Enroll Students.

Choose a mode

In the activity’s settings, pick Per-Student or Group Assignment under Issuance.

Assign students

A Students panel appears on the activity page listing everyone enrolled. Select students and assign or unassign them — and in Group Assignment mode, choose which group letter they go into.
Everyone enrolled is assigned by default. You don’t have to assign students one by one to get started in Per-Student mode — enroll them in the classroom and they can begin. Use the Students panel when you want to remove someone, or to place people into groups.

What students see

Students open the activity the same way they always have. Behind the scenes they land in their own copy — or their group’s — and can only edit that one.
  • They can’t see other students’ work, and other students can’t see theirs.
  • Anything you put on the activity before issuing it stays visible to everyone as a shared starting layer. On maps, your own pins show for every student but are locked — students can read them, but only you can change them.
  • On an issued map, students can add, edit, and delete their own pins, including managing images on them.
  • Newly assigned students get a notification in ChimeEdu telling them they have work. No email is sent.

Reviewing student work

The Students panel shows each student’s assignment status and when they last edited their copy, so you can see at a glance who has started and who hasn’t. In Group Assignment mode it also shows each group and how many members it has. To look at a student’s work, open their entry from the panel — you can view and edit any copy of your activity, including the shared starting layer. On charts there’s no per-student open link yet; use Live Results to see the class.

Common questions

Work isn’t deleted. Each copy stays attached to the student or group it belongs to, so switching back restores what they had. Switching from Per-Student to One shared doesn’t merge everyone’s work into a single copy, though — the shared layer is its own separate copy.
They keep working exactly as they are — students keep their copies and can carry on. You just can’t newly issue another activity, or make new assignments, until you’re back on Plus or Premium. Nothing is frozen retroactively and nothing is deleted.
No. An activity counts as one activity no matter how many students you issue it to.
Yes. On an issued timeline, a student’s PDF export contains their own work plus the shared layer you provided.
They’re assigned automatically, and get their own copy the first time they open the activity.
