Archive is the reversible alternative to Delete. Delete removes the classroom, its enrollments and its history for good. Archive changes nothing about the data — it only changes who can see it.
What archiving does
- The classroom moves out of your Classrooms page into the Archived view.
- It no longer counts toward your plan’s classroom limit, which frees a slot for a new class.
- Students no longer see it on their dashboard. Its public page, classroom code and any invitation links show an “archived” notice instead of the classroom.
- Enrollments stay in place, so nobody has to re-join when you restore it.
- Editing is paused: the name, description, code and roster can’t be changed until you restore.
Archiving a classroom
1
Open the classroom
On the classroom page, click Archive beside Delete.
2
Decide what happens to its activities
The confirmation shows how many activities live in the classroom and offers Also archive its activities, ticked by default. Leave it ticked to free those plan slots too; untick it if you still use the activities elsewhere. Archived activities remember which classroom they came from.
3
Confirm
Click Archive. A red banner on the classroom page confirms it, with a Restore classroom button ready when you need it.
What students see
Nothing. An archived classroom disappears from the student dashboard and from the list of enrolled classes. A student who opens an old link, or types the classroom code, sees This classroom has been archived by its teacher and nothing else. Work they submitted is untouched and reappears when you restore.Restoring a classroom
Either click Restore classroom in the banner on the classroom page, or open the Archived view on your Classrooms page and click Restore on the classroom’s card. Restoring is the undo of archiving:- The classroom returns to your active list and to every enrolled student’s dashboard. The classroom code works again.
- Activities that were archived along with it are re-linked, with student work intact. This is different from restoring a single activity from your Archived activities, which starts it fresh for a new class.
- Restoring counts against your plan again. If you’re at your classroom limit, restore is refused until you archive or delete another classroom, or upgrade. If the activities would push you past your activity limit, the classroom still restores and the activities that don’t fit stay archived — the message tells you how many.
Frequently asked
Is there a limit to how long a classroom can stay archived?
Is there a limit to how long a classroom can stay archived?
No. Archived classrooms are kept indefinitely, and nothing is purged automatically.
Can students still open the assessments and study guides that were in it?
Can students still open the assessments and study guides that were in it?
Not from their dashboard — the classroom and everything listed under it is hidden. A direct link to an assessment still follows that assessment’s own due date and close rules, so use those if you want it shut too.
