Typing questions one at a time is fine for a five-question check-in. For anything longer — or for questions you already have in a spreadsheet, a Kahoot export or an old worksheet — use Import questions. It works the same way on assessments and on quizzes, and it never overwrites anything: imported questions are added after the ones you already have.
Import is rolling out gradually. If you don’t see the Import questions button yet, it isn’t switched on for your account — nothing is wrong with your assessment.

Where to find it

Open the assessment (or the quiz activity), open Questions, and click Import questions next to Add Question. You’ll see three ways to bring questions in: Whichever you pick, you always get a preview first. Nothing is added until you click Import.

The spreadsheet layout

One question per row. Download a sample .csv inside the import window gives you the exact template. The columns are: For the newer types, the same columns do double duty:
  • numeric — put the expected number in correct, with an optional tolerance and unit: 9.81 ±0.05 m/s².
  • matching — write each pair as left=right in the option columns (or in correct, separated by ;); an option without = becomes an extra right-hand distractor.
  • ordering — list the items in option_a … option_f in the correct order, or in any order with correct giving the sequence (B;A;C).
A header row is recognised automatically, and commas, tabs and semicolons are all accepted as separators. Quotes around a value are fine (use them when a question contains a comma).
Coming from Kahoot? Export your kahoot as a spreadsheet and upload it as-is. ChimeEdu recognises the Question, Answer 1 – Answer 4, Time limit and Correct answer(s) columns.

Pasting plain text

If your questions live in a document rather than a spreadsheet, paste them as blocks separated by a blank line. The first line of a block is the question; the lines under it are the options. Mark the correct one with a *, or add an Answer: line:
Options can be written A), a., (a) or as a dash list. A block with no options becomes a written (short-answer) question on an assessment. Numbering at the start of a question (1., Q2)) is stripped.

Reading the preview

Every row shows the question, its type, its options (the correct one is ticked) and a status:
  • Ready — will be imported exactly as shown.
  • Fix — will be skipped, with the reason beside it. Common reasons: no correct option marked, more than one option marked correct, a question with no text, or a type the target doesn’t support.
Fix the rows in your file or your pasted text and preview again; only Ready rows are imported. The import button tells you how many that is.

Copying from another assessment or quiz

Choose the Copy from another … tab, pick the source, and tick the questions you want (everything is ticked by default). Copies are independent — editing the copy never changes the original, and the original keeps its own submissions and results. Assessments copy from assessments and quizzes copy from quizzes, because the two use different question formats.

Limits and rules

  • Up to 100 questions per import, and up to 100 questions per assessment or quiz in total. The preview tells you how many more will fit.
  • Quizzes accept multiple choice and true/false only. Written-answer rows show as Fix when importing into a quiz.
  • Several correct answers need the multi-select type, which is rolling out gradually. Until it’s switched on for your account, rows with more than one correct option show as Fix.
  • Questions with images (image-select, or featured images) can’t be imported from a file — add those by hand, or copy them from another assessment where they already exist.
  • An assessment that is published and already has submissions is locked, so it can’t receive imports either. Close it or duplicate it first.

Frequently asked

Yes. Imported questions are appended after your existing ones, in the order they appear in the file. Reorder them afterwards in the questions list if you like.
No. Importing only edits the question list. Students see the questions when the assessment is assigned and open, exactly as if you had typed them.
No. ChimeEdu reads the header row, so the columns can be in any order. Only the column names matter.
Assessment questions default to 1 point and no timer. Quiz questions default to a 30-second countdown and 100 points, which you can change per question after the import.
